A SHARED IMAGINING

"A Shared Imagining" is a phrase that identifies the real medium of poetry on the page and the real venue of performance on the stage: the human mind.

Through the form of the Idyll, as originated by the ancient Greek poet Theocritus, and as re-conceived by Magus Magnus in his book, Idylls for a Bare Stage, the poetic monologue is taken as theatre in and of itself, capable of being presented almost anywhere, and thereby affirming the actor as an individual artist.

The art of performing the Idyll is the creation of a mindscape whatever the setting, a shared theatre space of the mind.

SiGiLPAL and Yockadot

SiGiLPAL (Sui Generis Literary Performing Arts Lab) is the entity for productions and workshops associated with the Idylls in theory and practice as ventured on by Magus Magnus himself. The SiGiLPAL mission and organizational form are currently in development.

Magus Magnus has previous experience in producing and curating poetry performance and theater as director of the Yockadot Poetics Theatre Project (2005-2010).

Highlights through the years of Yockadot include:
*Rodrigo Toscano's Collapsible Poetics Theatre (his associated book is a 2008 National Poetry Series winner)
*Performance premiere of pieces in English by Daniil Kharms (created by Ric Royer and Jon Eaton, with Geodesic Gnome)
*The Rod Smith Circus, featuring Tom Raworth, Charles Bernstein, and Anselm Berrigan
*Melt, a dance-poetry piece by Lostwax dance company, under the direction of choreographer Jamie Jewett and based on poetry by Thalia Field. The piece included video projected from cameras on dancers' hands and a set with large sheets of melting ice.
*The 2007 Yockadot Poetics Theatre Festival, with organizers Ric Royer, Bonnie Jones, and Lauren Bender. 2 weekends of poetry and performance events (including an installation by Mark Greenwood and one of the rare final appearances of David Franks), and presentations of plays by poets Brent Cunningham, Tina Darragh, and Ellen Redbird, as well as "Sop Doll,"a modern Noh play by Lee Ann Brown and Tony Torn.

Yockadot consistently waved the banner of the following quote from Richard Foreman:

“Understand—it always makes sense. Sense can’t be avoided. If it first seems non-sense, wait: roots will reveal themselves.”

About the term Yockadot: the word came to our attention by way of D.C. poet and writer Dan Gutstein, from out of his interest in jump blues musician Tom Archia. Further research revealed the Yockadot to be a hybrid apple, originally produced by a Canadian couple, which failed in the marketplace. The term is also associated with masking—the Yockadot is similar to the domino, but with a large, lumpish, often variegated nose. Some experts categorize Groucho glasses as a kind of Yockadot.
